JAY-Z’s Lawyer Responds to Piers Morgan After False Jaguar Wright Claims
JAY-Z's attorney, Alex Spiro, has spoken out against Piers Morgan following a controversial episode of Piers Morgan Uncensored, in which singer Jaguar Wright made baseless accusations about the music mogul and his wife, Beyoncé. Wright’s claims, comparing JAY-Z to Diddy and alleging disturbing behavior, have been widely discredited.
During the interview, Wright accused JAY-Z and Beyoncé of being a "nasty couple" involved in malicious activities, such as "keeping people against their will" and "putting people on planes while they’re unconscious," likening it to the tragic circumstances surrounding Aaliyah's death. After the episode aired, Piers Morgan issued a rare public apology, admitting that Wright's claims were "totally false."
In a recent interview with TMZ, Spiro addressed the situation, explaining that he had to take action due to the severity of the false accusations. “There’s rumors, and then there’s nonsense, and this is one step further," Spiro said. "This is a pointed and formal accusation of something, and I felt it needed to be responded to."
Contrary to speculation, Spiro clarified that the legal action was not a cease and desist but rather an ultimatum. "It was quite bluntly an ultimatum, which was to remove that accusation that’s demonstrably false or a court’s going to order you to," he stated.
Spiro also criticized Morgan for allowing such damaging claims to air, noting that it not only harmed the Carters but also distracted from real victims in ongoing cases. "In doing that to get clicks, he didn’t just harm the Carters. What he did effectively was to drown out the voices of actual victims in an ongoing case, in an ongoing investigation — and that was too much for me," Spiro added.
In his apology, Morgan reflected on the responsibility that comes with hosting a public platform. “Last week, I interviewed Jaguar Wright, a singer-songwriter who’s made claims about Diddy for years. Those claims have received a lot of attention in the media across many platforms for many years,” Morgan said.
He continued, “Jaguar Wright unexpectedly made several serious allegations about JAY-Z and Beyoncé during that interview. As I said in the moment, they were not present to respond or defend themselves. But now they have. Their lawyers contacted us to say that those claims were totally false and have no basis in fact.”
Morgan concluded by explaining why the interview was edited, saying, “We’ve therefore complied with the legal request to cut them from the original interview. Editing interviews is not something we do lightly on a show called Uncensored, but, like the proverbial cries of fire in a crowded theater, there are legal limits on us, too. And we apologize to JAY-Z and Beyoncé.”
The incident serves as a reminder of the legal and ethical responsibilities media platforms hold, especially when airing unverified claims that can damage reputations and interfere with serious investigations.
