Adrian Peterson Ordered to Surrender Assets Over $12 Million Debt: Court Seizure Details Revealed

Former NFL star Adrian Peterson has been ordered by a Houston judge to hand over assets to repay a substantial debt, estimated at $12 million. This ruling is the latest development in an ongoing legal battle over a nearly decade-old unpaid loan.

Court Orders Asset Seizure to Settle $12 Million Debt

According to Harris County court records, a judge has instructed constables in Fort Bend County to accompany a court-appointed receiver to Peterson's home in Missouri City, Texas, to seize assets. This action stems from a 2016 loan of $5.2 million that Peterson took out from Pennsylvania-based DeAngelo Vehicle Sales.

In 2021, a New York court awarded DeAngelo Vehicle Sales nearly $9 million, including interest, and appointed Attorney Robert Berleth as the receiver responsible for collecting the debt. The interest rate on the judgment was set at 9%, further increasing Peterson's debt over time.

Peterson Accused of Concealing Assets

In August 2023, Berleth filed a new lawsuit accusing Peterson of trying to prevent the court-ordered seizure of his assets. The lawsuit claims that Peterson was hiding non-exempt property in multiple storage units. When Berleth attempted to recover these assets, Peterson allegedly transferred the units under someone else’s name, making it difficult for the receiver to access them.

The lawsuit also accuses Peterson of using his connections to two companies in an effort to conceal assets from the court.

Controversial Auction of Football Memorabilia

Earlier in 2023, hundreds of Peterson’s football memorabilia items were listed for auction by Texmax Auctions, LLC, a Houston-based auction company. Despite the items being potentially available for seizure by the court-appointed receiver, the auction took place without Peterson’s consent.

In a now-deleted Instagram video, Peterson publicly denied authorizing the sale of his memorabilia, saying, “I am financially stable and would never sell off my hard-earned trophies." He went on to claim that the auction company acted unlawfully.

Peterson vowed to take legal action against the auction house, and as of now, the auction remains on hold. Texmax Auctions initially attributed the delay to bankruptcy court issues, although Peterson’s legal team denied that he had filed for bankruptcy.

Peterson's Legal Battle Continues

In March 2024, Peterson’s legal team responded to Berleth’s lawsuit, strongly denying accusations that the former athlete was attempting to "hinder, defraud, or delay" the court or the receiver. They also contested claims that Peterson was improperly transferring or hiding assets.

Despite these ongoing legal challenges, Peterson has publicly maintained his innocence, claiming that any misunderstanding with the auction house was a result of miscommunication and not an intentional act to avoid paying his debt.

A Look at Adrian Peterson’s Career

Adrian Peterson, 39, was born in Palestine, Texas, and became a star running back at the University of Oklahoma. He launched his NFL career in 2007 with the Minnesota Vikings, where he spent most of his 15-year career. In 2016, Peterson suffered a knee injury, and after the Vikings chose not to renew his contract, he played for several other NFL teams, including the New Orleans Saints, Arizona Cardinals, Washington Commanders (formerly known as the Washington Redskins), Detroit Lions, Tennessee Titans, and Seattle Seahawks.

Peterson last played in the NFL in 2021. In a 2023 interview with Yahoo Sports, he revealed that if he wasn't signed by an NFL team that year, he would officially retire.

Peterson’s legal team has yet to issue a formal response to the latest developments, as efforts to collect the debt continue.
