In a significant move for the 2024 presidential race, Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic Party's nominee, announced Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate. The announcement, confirmed by Fox News Digital, positions Harris and Walz against former President Trump in a highly anticipated election showdown.
Walz, 60, emerged as a strong contender for the vice-presidential slot shortly after Harris took over as the Democratic standard-bearer following President Biden. His selection was anticipated due to his extensive political experience and strong reputation within the party.
As a two-term governor of Minnesota and former congressman, Walz has a track record of winning in a state that has long been a Democratic stronghold in presidential elections. However, with the Trump campaign eyeing Minnesota as a potential flip, Walz’s presence on the ticket could be pivotal.
Harris officially announced her choice on the social media platform X, stating, "I am proud to announce that I've asked @Tim_Walz to be my running mate. As a governor, a coach, a teacher, and a veteran, he's delivered for working families like his." She continued, "It's great to have him on the team. Now let's get to work."
Highlighting Walz’s personal and professional background, Harris emphasized his dedication to middle-class families. She noted his upbringing in a small Nebraska town, his early enlistment in the National Guard at 17, and his reliance on Social Security survivor benefits after losing his father to cancer at 19. Harris praised Walz’s use of the GI Bill to further his education and his eventual transition into teaching.
Walz's background as both a football coach and an advisor to the Gay-Straight Alliance was also highlighted by Harris, who said, "His impressive background informs his record. He worked with Republicans to pass infrastructure investments, cut taxes for working families, and made Minnesota the first state to enshrine constitutional abortion protections after Roe v. Wade was overturned."
In addition to his progressive achievements in Minnesota, Walz has been a staunch advocate for gun control, passing legislation for universal background checks. His leadership in the Democratic Governors Association (DGA) has also resulted in record-breaking fundraising, which could further bolster Harris's campaign.
Walz's addition to the ticket is expected to strengthen Harris's appeal in Minnesota and the neighboring battleground states of Wisconsin and Michigan. His plainspoken, Midwestern appeal, combined with his progressive policy victories, positions him as a key asset in the race.
Born and raised in rural Nebraska, Walz enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1981, shortly after high school. He later attended Chadron State College, graduating in 1989 with a degree in social science education. Walz’s career in education took him to China, where he taught English and American History through a Harvard University program before returning to teach in Nebraska and later in Minnesota.
Walz’s military service included a deployment to Italy in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2003. He retired from the National Guard as a command sergeant major in 2005. His political career began with his election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2006, where he represented Minnesota's 1st Congressional District for six terms. During his final term in Congress, Walz served as the ranking member of the House Veterans Affairs Committee.
Elected as governor of Minnesota in 2018 and re-elected in 2022, Walz has built a reputation for championing progressive policies, including legalizing recreational marijuana and protecting abortion rights.
As the Harris-Walz ticket prepares for the upcoming election, their combined experience and shared values promise to shape a compelling campaign narrative. Harris concluded her announcement with a rallying call to action: "We are going to build a great partnership. We are going to build a great team. We are going to win this election."
