The hip hop community is reeling from the recent loss of two prominent figures: rapper Chino XL and DJ Polo. Their deaths have left a significant impact on fans and peers across the industry, marking a somber moment for hip hop enthusiasts everywhere.
Chino XL Passes Away at 50
Chino XL, the influential MC known for his intricate wordplay and dynamic presence, passed away on Sunday at his home. He is survived by his mother, four children, a stepson, four grandchildren, and his longtime partner, Stephanie. In a poignant statement, his daughters shared: “Our father had many titles -- King of Punchlines, Puerto Rican Superhero -- but the most important one was Girl Dad. And what he gave us most in that role was his strength, straightforwardness, and ability to be super realistic. The main thing we are feeling now is that our Dad is at peace, and so we are at peace.”
Tributes from across the hip hop world have poured in, honoring Chino XL’s legacy. Icons such as Chuck D, Joe Budden, KXNG Crooked, and ScHoolBoy Q, along with numerous underground and battle rap figures, have taken to social media to celebrate his contributions to the genre.
Chino XL, a Bronx native, began his career with Rick Rubin's American Recordings, releasing his debut album in 1996. His lyrical prowess quickly garnered attention on both coasts, and he became a notable figure in California's rap scene. He is remembered for his collaborations with Eminem, RZA, and KRS-One on the 1999 single "The Anthem" and his lyrical feud with Tupac Shakur. His recent feature on Rakim's album "G.O.D.s Network - Reb7rth" included the track "Pendulum Swing" with Crooked, Canibus, and La the Darkman.
The cause of Chino XL’s death has not yet been disclosed, but his family has announced that memorial plans will be shared soon. He was 50 years old.
