Lake Travis incoming senior Matthew Baldwin continued a Cavalier tradition by committing to play quarterback at Colorado State University July 14.
Baldwin becomes the eighth consecutive Lake Travis quarterback to pledge to a FBS college. The streak began in 2006, when Todd Reesing signed with Kansas and continued with Garrett Gilbert (Texas), Michael Brewer (Texas Tech), Colin Lagasse (SMU), Baker Mayfield (Texas Tech; preferred walk-on), Dominic DeLira (Iowa State) and Charlie Brewer (Baylor).
The 6-foot-3, 195-pound Baldwin is ranked as a three-star prospect by Rivals and 247Sports. He’s listed as the 35th pro-style quarterback in the 2018 recruiting class by 247Sports.
Last season, Baldwin completed 76 percent of his passes and threw for 673 yards and 10 touchdowns in 93 passes attempted while backing up Charlie Brewer on the Class 6A Division I state championship team. He also delivered in a pressure-packed overtime win over eventual Class 6A Division II state finalist Cibolo Steele, filling in for an injured Brewer and leading the Cavs to a game-winning drive in a 59-56 victory.
Last month, Baldwin led Lake Travis to a state championship in 7-on-7 football.
In his Twitter announcement, Baldwin thanks his family, friends and coaches “who have taught me so much about not only football, but life as well.”
He also thanked “the Lake Travis community, for making this city an incredible place to grow up and compete in athletics, and academics.”
Colorado State, which competes in the Mountain West Conference, has quietly developed one of the more consistent programs in the country. The Rams have played in four consecutive bowl games, and the program recently revealed its new, $220 million stadium.
The Rams have gone 14-12 in two seasons under head coach Mike Bobo.
