Nvidia is making another enormous bet on the future of artificial intelligence.
The AI chip giant has agreed to acquire Hugging Face for approximately $12.93 billion, one of the largest acquisitions in Nvidia’s history and a deal that could significantly expand the company's influence beyond the processors powering the AI revolution.
The acquisition puts Nvidia at the center of one of the world's most important communities for open artificial intelligence.
Why Hugging Face Matters
Hugging Face has become a major destination for developers, researchers and companies building artificial intelligence applications. The platform allows users to discover, share, customize and deploy AI models, datasets and applications.
According to Nvidia, more than 18 million developers, researchers and creators use Hugging Face. The platform hosts more than 3 million AI models, 500,000 datasets and 1 million applications, while more than 200,000 companies use its technology.
That means Nvidia isn't simply acquiring another AI startup. It's gaining ownership of a major distribution and development layer of the AI ecosystem.
Nvidia Is Expanding Beyond Chips
Nvidia's GPUs have become foundational infrastructure for the generative AI boom. Companies developing increasingly powerful models have spent billions building computing systems around Nvidia hardware.
But the Hugging Face acquisition demonstrates how Nvidia's ambitions are expanding.
Instead of remaining primarily the company supplying the computing power behind AI, Nvidia is building a broader position across the industry — encompassing chips, infrastructure, software, models and now one of the world's largest open AI developer communities.
That could make Nvidia increasingly difficult to avoid as artificial intelligence becomes embedded across industries.
A Huge Bet on Open AI
The acquisition is also an important endorsement of open and open-weight AI models.
These models give developers greater ability to customize and deploy artificial intelligence technology instead of relying exclusively on proprietary platforms.
That creates an alternative to closed AI ecosystems operated by companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said Hugging Face will remain open to the broader AI industry. Developers will still be able to select their preferred models, frameworks, cloud providers and computing platforms, and Nvidia hardware will not be required to use Hugging Face.
Maintaining that neutrality could be critical.
Hugging Face's value comes partly from being a central meeting place for an enormous range of AI technologies — including technologies that compete with Nvidia and its partners.
Nvidia Is Buying an Ecosystem
The nearly $13 billion price tag becomes particularly interesting when compared with Hugging Face's previous valuation.
The company was valued at approximately $4.5 billion in 2023. Nvidia is now paying nearly three times that amount.
The premium suggests Nvidia sees strategic value that extends far beyond Hugging Face's current revenue.
The real prize may be its developer network.
Technology platforms become extraordinarily powerful when developers build businesses, applications and workflows around them. By bringing Hugging Face into its ecosystem, Nvidia gains a direct connection to millions of people developing the next generation of AI products.
The AI Industry Is Consolidating
The deal also reflects a larger shift occurring throughout artificial intelligence.
The first phase of the generative AI boom was largely a race to build the most powerful models and secure enough computing capacity to train them.
The next phase may increasingly be about controlling the infrastructure and platforms through which those models reach developers, businesses and consumers.
That is pushing technology giants to secure strategic positions throughout the AI stack.
Nvidia's Hugging Face acquisition is one of the clearest examples yet.
What Happens Next
The transaction is expected to close during the first half of 2027, subject to the usual closing requirements.
If completed, Nvidia will own a company positioned at the intersection of open AI models, developers, datasets and applications while continuing to dominate much of the hardware infrastructure powering artificial intelligence.
The bigger story, therefore, isn't simply that Nvidia spent nearly $13 billion.
It's what Nvidia bought.
Nvidia already supplies much of the computing power behind the AI economy. Hugging Face gives it a much larger position in the community actually building that economy.
And as the AI race evolves from creating individual models toward controlling entire ecosystems, Nvidia appears determined to compete at virtually every layer.
