Lauren London is officially joining the growing cast of the upcoming Snoop Dogg biopic, taking on one of the most important roles in the story of the West Coast Hip-Hop legend.
London will portray Beverly Tate, Snoop Dogg’s late mother, in Universal Pictures’ upcoming film Snoop. Jonathan Daviss, known for Outer Banks, has been tapped to portray Snoop Dogg, while Myles Bullock will play Dr. Dre.
Lauren London Takes on a Major Role in Snoop Dogg’s Story
Beverly Tate played a significant role in shaping the man the world would eventually know as Snoop Dogg.
Born Calvin Broadus Jr., Snoop reportedly received his famous childhood nickname from his mother because of his love for the Peanuts character Snoopy. Tate was also a longtime church choir director, bringing a strong musical and spiritual influence into Snoop’s upbringing. She died in 2021.
Snoop continued honoring his mother after her death, including dedicating his 2025 gospel album Altar Call to her memory.
Casting London as Tate also creates an interesting full-circle connection between the actress and Snoop.
Before becoming widely known for movies such as ATL, London appeared in Snoop Dogg's early-2000s music videos, including “From tha Chuuuch to da Palace” and “Drop It Like It’s Hot.” More than two decades later, she will now portray the woman who helped shape his early life.
The Snoop Dogg Biopic Cast Is Taking Shape
The film is being directed by Craig Brewer, whose credits include Hustle & Flow. Brewer rewrote the original screenplay by Joe Robert Cole.
Jonathan Daviss will lead the movie as Snoop Dogg, while Myles Bullock has been cast as Dr. Dre, a crucial figure in Snoop’s rise during the early 1990s.
Snoop Dogg himself is heavily involved behind the scenes. He is producing the movie alongside Death Row Pictures president Sara Ramaker and Imagine Entertainment's Brian Grazer. The project will also have access to music from Snoop’s extensive catalog.
That involvement could give the movie something many music biopics struggle to obtain: direct participation from the artist whose life is being portrayed, along with access to the music that defined his career.
When Does the Snoop Dogg Biopic Come Out?
Universal Pictures has officially scheduled Snoop to hit theaters on August 6, 2027. The studio describes the movie as a definitive biopic chronicling the life and career of the rapper, entrepreneur and entertainment icon.
The movie is also significant from a business standpoint. Snoop will be the first feature film produced under Death Row Pictures’ overall deal with NBCUniversal Entertainment, expanding Snoop Dogg’s Death Row brand beyond recorded music and further into film and television.
With Lauren London now portraying Beverly Tate, Jonathan Daviss playing Snoop and Myles Bullock stepping into the role of Dr. Dre, the movie is beginning to assemble the people central to Snoop Dogg’s journey from Long Beach to global superstardom.
