José Mourinho Shuts Down Málaga Coach’s Referee Complaints After Real Madrid’s 4-0 Win
José Mourinho had little interest in responding to Málaga manager Juanfran Funes after Real Madrid cruised to a 4-0 LaLiga victory on Sunday.
Real Madrid continued its strong start to the 2026-27 season with a convincing 4-0 victory over Málaga at the Santiago Bernabéu, but some of the biggest talking points came after the final whistle.
Málaga coach Juanfran Funes expressed frustration with the officiating, suggesting Real Madrid's players were receiving favorable treatment on foul calls.
Funes argued that relatively minor contact appeared to result in fouls for Madrid, while Málaga players needed to absorb considerably more contact before receiving the same calls.
When Mourinho was informed of Funes' comments during his post-match press conference, the Real Madrid manager chose not to engage in a war of words.
"It doesn't deserve a comment," Mourinho said.
Instead, Mourinho focused on his own team's performance and the development of several key players.
Mourinho Praises Jude Bellingham
Jude Bellingham was one of Madrid's standout performers, and Mourinho praised the England international's demanding mentality.
Bellingham was pleased with Madrid's first-half performance but was much more critical of the team's play during the final 20 minutes.
Mourinho acknowledged the drop in intensity, explaining that maintaining maximum organization and energy for an entire 90 minutes remains a work in progress.
The Madrid manager also revealed that he has adjusted Bellingham's defensive responsibilities to give the midfielder greater freedom.
Rather than forcing Bellingham to drop extremely deep and defend almost as an additional left back, Mourinho has reorganized the team to allow him to operate in positions where he can have a greater offensive impact.
Camavinga and Huijsen Earn Mourinho's Praise
Mourinho also highlighted Eduardo Camavinga's performance and praised defender Dean Huijsen's development.
The Portuguese manager emphasized Huijsen's ability to defend one-on-one situations, provide security at the back and confidently play the ball through opposing lines.
For Mourinho, however, defensive reliability remains the priority.
The 4-0 victory gives Real Madrid another three points during the opening stages of the LaLiga campaign and adds momentum to Mourinho's attempt to restore the club following two difficult seasons.
Mourinho made it clear that rebuilding Real Madrid will not happen overnight.
He described the process as a season-long mission rather than something that can be accomplished in a matter of weeks.
And while Funes' complaints about the officiating may continue to generate debate following Málaga's defeat, Mourinho appears determined to keep the attention on Real Madrid's performance rather than the controversy surrounding the referee.
