Artificial intelligence is changing the job market faster than many workers expected.
AI can already write reports, generate images, analyze data, create presentations, answer customer questions, produce computer code and automate parts of many office jobs. That doesn't mean every white-collar career is disappearing, but it does mean young people and career changers should think carefully about which skills will remain valuable.
One answer may be hiding in plain sight: the skilled trades.

AI may make electricians more productive by helping with diagnostics, documentation and planning, but the physical installation and repair work remains difficult to automate.

2. HVAC Technician
Heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration technicians install and repair systems in homes, schools, hospitals and commercial buildings.

More sophisticated climate-control systems and increased emphasis on energy efficiency are expected to contribute to demand.
This is another field where AI could become a tool rather than simply a replacement. An AI system might identify a likely equipment failure, but a qualified technician still needs to make the repair.
3. Plumber, Pipefitter or Steamfitter
A leaking pipe doesn't care how advanced ChatGPT becomes.
Plumbers install and repair the systems that move water and other materials through homes, businesses, factories and infrastructure.
The BLS reports median annual earnings of approximately $62,970 for plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters in 2024, with the highest 10% earning more than $105,000.
Plumbing also offers something many digital careers don't: a path toward building a local service business.
An experienced plumber can eventually move from employee to contractor or business owner, creating another layer of earning potential.
4. Industrial Machinery Mechanic
Here's a trade that could actually benefit from increased automation.
Factories are installing increasingly sophisticated machines, robotics and automated equipment. Those machines still need people who can install, maintain, diagnose and repair them.
BLS projections show industrial machinery mechanics growing substantially through 2034, with a 2024 median wage of roughly $63,760.
