August 25, 2026 marks 25 years since the tragic death of Aaliyah, one of the most influential R&B artists of her generation.
Aaliyah Dana Haughton was only 22 years old when she died on August 25, 2001, in a plane crash shortly after takeoff from Marsh Harbour in the Bahamas. She had just finished filming the music video for her single “Rock the Boat.” Eight other people aboard the aircraft also died.
A quarter-century later, Aaliyah's impact can still be heard and seen throughout R&B, pop music, fashion and entertainment.
Aaliyah Was Already a Star at 22
Aaliyah accomplished more before her 23rd birthday than many artists achieve over an entire career.
She released her debut album, Age Ain't Nothing But a Number, as a teenager before taking a major creative leap with her 1996 sophomore album, One in a Million.
Working with producers and songwriters including Timbaland and Missy Elliott, Aaliyah helped introduce a futuristic approach to R&B that separated her music from much of what was dominating radio at the time.
One in a Million eventually went double platinum, while her third and final studio album, Aaliyah, arrived in 2001 and reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200.
Songs including “One in a Million,” “Are You That Somebody?,” “Try Again,” “More Than a Woman” and “Rock the Boat” remain some of the defining records associated with her career.
The Tragic Plane Crash
On August 25, 2001, Aaliyah and members of her team prepared to leave the Bahamas after completing the “Rock the Boat” video.
Their Cessna 402B crashed shortly after takeoff.
Investigations later determined that the aircraft was approximately 700 pounds over its maximum takeoff weight. The pilot was also not certified to fly that particular aircraft, and toxicology testing found cocaine in his urine and traces of alcohol in his stomach.
The sudden loss stunned the music industry.
Aaliyah wasn't a veteran artist approaching the end of her career. She was a 22-year-old superstar whose career appeared to be entering an entirely new stage.
She Was Moving Beyond Music
Aaliyah was also establishing herself in Hollywood.
She starred alongside Jet Li in Romeo Must Die in 2000 and later appeared in Queen of the Damned, which was released after her death in 2002.
Her performance of “Try Again” from the Romeo Must Die soundtrack further demonstrated her crossover potential and earned her a Grammy nomination.
At the time of her death, Aaliyah wasn't simply positioned as an R&B singer. She was developing into a music, film and fashion star with global potential.
Why Aaliyah Still Matters 25 Years Later
Perhaps the most remarkable part of Aaliyah's story is how contemporary her influence still feels.
The minimalist production, soft vocal delivery and futuristic R&B aesthetic associated with her work helped establish ideas that would become increasingly prominent in R&B decades later.
Her fashion influence has also endured — from oversized streetwear and sunglasses to sleek, more glamorous looks that helped make her a style icon of the late 1990s and early 2000s.
In 2025, Mattel released an Aaliyah Barbie doll in celebration of what would have been her 46th birthday. The doll reportedly sold out within about 30 minutes of its release, another indication of the lasting demand surrounding her legacy.
25 Years Later, Aaliyah's Legacy Lives On
Aaliyah's career lasted only a fraction of the time it should have.
Yet 25 years after her death, people who weren't even born when One in a Million was released are discovering her music, recreating her fashion and drawing inspiration from the sound she helped pioneer.
That's what makes August 25 more than the anniversary of a tragedy.
It's also a reminder of just how much Aaliyah accomplished in 22 years — and how far her influence traveled without her.
