From banging beats in his grandmother’s basement to dominating global stages, LL Cool J has charted an extraordinary career—now extending to one of pop culture’s most iconic nights: the MTV Video Music Awards.

At just 16, James Todd Smith—better known as LL Cool J—signed with Def Jam in 1984, laying the foundation for a four-decade reign in music and beyond  His debut single "I Need a Beat" launched a groundbreaking career, followed by the landmark album Radio in 1985 With Bigger and Deffer (1987), LL Cool J scored hits like “I Need Love,” a pioneering crossover of hip‑hop and R&B

2025 MTV VMAs: LL Cool J Steps Up—Solo

On Sunday, September 7, 2025, LL Cool J will host the MTV Video Music Awards solo for the first time, airing live from New York’s UBS Arena at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on CBS and MTV, and streaming on Paramount+ 

This follows his co-hosting role in 2022, alongside Nicki Minaj and Jack Harlow 

In addition to hosting, LL Cool J is a nominee, with his 2024 track “Murdergram Deaux” featuring Eminem, up for Best Hip‑Hop 

Also, the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award will be presented to Mariah Carey during the ceremony, adding further glitz to the night
