Terence Crawford Lost His IBF Title After Not Putting Up A Required Defense

Terence Crawford

After losing his IBF belt, Terence Crawford's historic unification of titles in the welterweight category has come to an end. Crawford lost the title because the International Boxing Federation refused to hold the required defense of the relevant title. Crawford has to give Errol Spence Jr. a rematch right away for the unification showdown. Rematch provisions, however, are not accepted by the IBF as a legitimate defense against championship defenses. Crawford was told following his victory over Spence Jr. that he would have to face Jaron "Boots" Ennis.

Crawford's loss of the title has become Ennis the new temporary IBF welterweight champion. Despite having a 31-0 record, Ennis has never faced a top-tier opponent or been in a major bout. Now that he is in charge, that will probably alter. In the upcoming weeks, the IBF will probably make a bout announcement. As previously stated, Ennis was supposed to be Crawford's championship defense after the Spence Jr. bout. Crawford made one mandatory defense of the IBF title in 2018. Crawford has been the champion of the IBF since 2017. Although it has not yet been confirmed, his rematch with Spence Jr. is slated to take place in February of next year. Crawford has also not yet made a remark about the IBF's ruling.
