Box Office Sales for 'Solo' Drop as Film Reels in $29.3M in Second Weekend

Solo: A Star Wars Story continued to drop off at the box office during its second weekend in theaters, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The Star Wars one-off from Disney and Lucasfilm bought in a disappointing $29.3 million domestically. That’s a 65 percent decrease from what it claimed during its three-day, Memorial Day weekend review, according to THR. The film's second weekend brings its domestic total to $148.9 million.

For reference, that’s way less than the $286 million Rogue One, the first stand-alone Star Wars film, had by its second weekend in theaters back in 2016. It's also the lowest second weekend of any movie in the franchise. Internationally, Solo made $30.3 million, for an overall global weekend of nearly $60 million. The movie’s worldwide total is now $264.2 million.

There are a number of factors that may have contributed to Solo’s second disappointing weekend. Some blame a perceived over-saturation of Stars Wars films, while others note its untimely arrival following the blockbuster films The Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2.

“There's a question of frequency, and how many times people will go to the movies,” Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis told The Hollywood Reporter. “Is this too much and too soon for a third time in a five-week period?”

Hollis was initially optimistic that the film might bounce back in its second weekend, but the new numbers show that’s not the case.

Solo: A Star Wars Story is a Ron Howard-directed film starring Donald Glover (as Lando Calrissian), Alden Ehrenreich (as Han), Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson, Thandie Newton, Paul Bettany, Joonas Suotamo, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge. The prequel follows a young Han Solo, who meets his future co-pilot Chewbacca and the gambler Calrissian.
